Dental Hygiene Program Overview

The Dental Hygiene program at Yorkville College ensures that our students upon graduation will be prepared to perform dental hygiene services as part of a select member of this regulated profession. The students of this program will learn to apply the dental hygiene process of care model, comprising of: assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. Included in the program are real-life clinical experiences to complement the academic theoretical portion of the program.
Yorkville College will ensure that our educational program in Dental Hygiene produces practitioners that meet all of the current practice trends and standards set out by the Commission on Dental Accreditation Canada, the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario, the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association and Ontario's Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. An important part of this program is practicing ethics and jurisprudence, and for the student to become familiar with the regulating bodies, the licensing agencies, dental products, and dental techniques.
Yorkville College will deploy teaching methodologies and evaluation techniques enhancing the knowledge, skills and ethical values of our student and graduate populations. These are distributed within the four major components of the dental hygiene curriculum, namely: Biomedical Sciences, Dental Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, and Dental Hygiene Theory and Practice.
Registered dental hygienists may pursue careers in private, public and community practices, institutions and education. They may work independently, interdependently and collaboratively with other health care professionals in a variety of practice settings and environments. They are educated to work directly with clients, using a problem-solving structure to treat and prevent tooth decay and gum infections and diseases. This is done through services such as periodontal debridement. They are trained to: assess clients tooth and gum health, plan and implement treatment, and evaluate the outcome
